What Is A Gateway?

A VoIP or PSTN gateway is, in simple terms, a device that can be situated between your telephone system and the phone socket. Its role is to convert analogue traffic from a traditional telephone system into internet telephony so the user can take advantage of the reduced call costs associated with VoIP technology using their existing hardware.

This is all done with no disruption to your call or how your telephone system is used, in fact most users are unaware of the gateways existence.

How Does A Gateway Save Me £££'s

In effect a gateway routes the call to wherever it is told to, this can be out to the telephone line in the traditional manner or across the internet as a VoIP call and this has two major advantages with regards to call costs.

Firstly, the user can now have access to internet telephony with their existing telephone system. This means no changes, disruption or having to learn a new telephone system, the only noticeable change is the lower telephone bill as the user can now take advantage of VosTel's low call charges.

Secondly a gateway can be used for Least Cost Routing (LCR) which means it can identify and send outbound calls in a specified route, either over VoIP or across the traditional system. This is especially useful when some proprietary service providers offer preferential rates on certain calls such as mobile calls but not on other calls, in this example an LCR enabled gateway would identify any mobile call and send it via traditional telephony as well as identifying any other call and sending that as an internet telephone call.

The cost savings using a gateway can be immense as you are automatically using the cheapest method for each and every phone call you make. It is not unusual to find that a quarterly business telephone bill can be reduced by 40%...that's a very desirable saving!

The cost of a gateway varies and is dependant on existing infrastructure, the number of ISDN lines, the required number of concurrent calls and many other factors.
